Teaching British Values

Mathematics at Bilbrook helps prepare children for British life by developing their ability to make logical decisions and solve problems. They learn to work both independently and collaboratively and appreciate maths in everyday life whether it be in finance, patterns in nature or statistical analysis.

In Mathematics, at Bilbrook CE Middle, we intend to create confident mathematicians who become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, are able to reason mathematically and solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication. The programme of Mathematics at Bilbrook CE Middle follows the National Curriculum and the intention is that all children have a rapid recall of mathematical facts which will enable them to make connections within the subject of maths.
Children are given opportunities to work both independently and as part of a team when tackling mathematical tasks building resilience in the face of adversity. Children are regularly given the opportunity to work on tasks which require them to apply their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
The implementation of the maths curriculum is underpinned by the use of the concrete, pictorial, abstract framework; we believe this is a highly effective approach to teaching that develops a deep and sustainable understanding of maths. All new learning is explicitly modelled by the teacher. Each lesson challenges children to retrieve knowledge; to rapidly recall key number facts; to make explicit links with prior learning and to apply their new learning in context.
The impact is that children leave Bilbrook CE Middle as confident mathematicians with the knowledge and skills required for the next stage of their education, and indeed, life.
